Aviation English

lijn

What is the aviation english ?

What makes IVAO really realistic is the communication between pilots and controllers. During the first times it will be difficult to find the correct words and sentences but in no time you will be used to it. What can help for example is to connect to the network as an observer and listen to the pilots. That's the way you will learn the most.
It is really important to know the commands exactly. It is very annoying to have pilots with their own aviation English.

First you have to know the Aviation Alphabet by heart. And this time we mean it. You have to be able to say the alphabet whitout thinking. Everytime you say an aircraft callsign or a route to folow you have to use the aviation Alphabet. It should become normal. Below you find the whole list:

A: Alpha N: November
B: Bravo              O: Oscar
C: Charlie P: Papa
D: Delta Q: Quebec
E: Echo R: Romeo
F: Foxtrot S: Sierra
G: Golf T: Tango
H: Hotel U: Uniform
I: India V: Victor
J: Juliet W: Whiskey
K: Kilo X: X-ray
L: Lima Y: Yankee
M: Mike Z: Zulu

Be Carefull: Some callsigns are company's callsigns. For example SAB17V, don't say Sierra Alpha Bravo 17 Victor but Sabena 17 Victor. It's the same for UAL7WC, don't say Uniform Alpha Lima 7 Whiskey Charlie. United 7 Whiskey Charlie will do.

The next part is an example of an IFR flight from Brussels to Schiphol. You can fly two types of flight, the first one is VFR which stands for Visual Flight Rule and the other one is IFR, Instrumental Flight Rules. This example is the same as the one in the Newbies Pilot manual but without the images. Our callsign will be "SAB17V". Every time we are using something we need to explain, we are adding a "*" which will be explained at the bottom of this page. All you already know, is that the pilot is you, and the ATC is the Air Traffic Controller.
